Together these three polyunsaturates molecules form the essential fatty acid. Omega 3 can be extremely beneficial to individuals who are at high risk or already have cardiovascular disease. According to research and testing conducted by the FDA, Omega 3 may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in supplements that contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) omega-3 fatty acids. "Coronary heart disease is a significant health problem that causes 500,000 deaths annually in the United States," said Dr. Lester M. Crawford, Acting FDA Commissioner. "This new qualified health claim for omega-3 fatty acids should help consumers as they work to improve their health by identifying foods that contain these important compounds." A study in 2006 conducted by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that with regular human consumption of fish and/or fish oil supplements there is a decrease in death and cardiovascular problems.
